Running My First Half-Marathon Tips

Hello everyone! It feels like it’s been awhile. In case you were all wondering, I’ve been spending my “free time” preparing for a half-marathon. I’m not a runner in any way, shape, or form.  So I decided to read a few Runner’s World magazines and books, downloading some apps on my iPhone, as well as using my Nike Fuelband SE to its full potential.

I’m running the Nike Women’s Half-Marathon in DC on April 27th. I registered at a 12:30/mile pace, so this is my goal pace. I’m trying to stay under this goal during training, just so I have some wiggle room the day of.

I am using the Nike Running app to track my running progress.  It’s great to see how much I’ve progressed with my running! The app generates a running program depending on your race day goals, including rest days and cross training days. You can link it to social media as well.

When I have cross training days, I use the Nike Training Club app. You can also generate a training program within this app, depending what your goals are there is: Lean, Tone, and Strong. As well as at: beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Review what each exercise is prior to starting, so you know what materials you will need. I find these days extremely important because I’m protecting myself from injuries by conditioning my muscles.

My NikeFuel Band SE is a great motivational tool. It tracks my steps, calories burned, and fuel points. Fuel points is Nike's way of measuring your activity, so the more active you are the more points you get. You earn trophies within the app for milestones and you can interact with other friends who have the band as well.

I'm currently trying to figure out my nutrition. Old habits die hard and I have a serious sweet tooth. I try to stick to a 1,750 calorie diet, but with so much running I'm constantly hungry. Im trying to stick to foods that will provide me the most energy, so if going over in calories is needed then it will happen. I'll let you know how this unfolds and what my results are on race day!

PLEASE share any tips that you have in regards to running and the nutrition involved.
